The Mistress Contract, by She and He (Serpent's Tail, December 2013)
What an extraordinary, and strange, little memoir this is! In 1981, 'She', an intelligent, educated woman, actively involved in the feminist movement of the time, asked her wealthy lover, 'He', to sign a contract with her, by which he would provide her with a home and income, and she would provide sexual acts as requested, with no emotional issues. 30 years later, the contract is still in place. This book is a series of dialogues between the pair, transcripts of recordings they made over the years as they discussed their relationship, the contract, gender politics, feminism, society and much more. It's a fascinating insight into the lives and thoughts of two engaged, intelligent, emotionally open people. However, I was left feeling a little dissatisfied by it; I'm not sure that either participant really explains themselves to the reader, and given that these tapes were probably not intended for publication, that's not surprising. I wonder if the addition of a commentary might have been useful, or an afterword?
